Strategy front cover

Swindon Borough Council and NHS Swindon have launched the Active Swindon Strategy which aims to improve the lives of people living in Swindon by gettingmore people, more active, more often.

Although in recent years the number of people partaking in regular physical exercise has increased, still less than one fifth of adults in Swindon participate in the recommended 30 minutes of moderate exercise, three times a week. The estimated annual care costs linked to inactivity in Swindon is £2.6 million.

Statistics show that 19.1 percent of primary school children in Swindon are obese – this is higher than the national average of 18.3 percent. The continuing rise in obesity and the impact of not doing regular physical activities are a major contributor to cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and cancer.

The Active Swindon Strategy will be evaluated in 2015. It will incorporate the Leisure Facilities Strategy that will focus on the provision of sport and leisure facilities in Swindon and the Swindon Sports Strategy which aims to give everyone the opportunity to participate in sport.

The Active Swindon Strategy is a shared commitment by a number of organisations to develop and deliver physical activity. The organisations, collectively called the Active Swindon Partnership, will help ensure that a physical activity agenda is seen as part of the core business within a wide range of services including: transport, planning, education, health, leisure and recreation.
